Why a gay/lesbian square dance club?

Members of the Cotton Pickin' Squares enjoy the recreation and camaraderie of square dance in a supportive and non-discriminatory environment. For 19 years now there have been gay/lesbian square dance groups across the USA, Canada, Australia, and recently Japan.

Do I need experience?

No. Most club members knew little or nothing about square dancing before joining the club. Classes are taught by a professional instructor.

Do I need a dance partner?

No. Singles and couples are all welcome.

Who dances which part?

In gay/lesbian square dancing, men and women lead as well as follow. You lead or follow based on your own preference.

So both men and women are involved?

A resounding YES!!! Men and women are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the club including dancing, teaching, activities, organization, and administration.

Where and when does the club meet?

We meet weekly on Thursday evenings at Prescott Baptist Church. We have arranged the use of the church Fellowship Hall and off-street parking is available.

Are there activities other than square dancing?

The Cotton Pickin'Squares is involved in a variety of community activities. We have performed in local fundraising events and have hosted community activities of our own. In addition, there are social activities such as potluck dinners, camping trips, and parties.

Are there other gay and lesbian square dance clubs around the country?

Our club is a member of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs - a gay and lesbian organization. There are over 40 I.A.G.S.D.C. groups in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Clubs host dances throughout the year and the I.A.G.S.D.C. holds an annual convention attended by approximately 1,500 gay and lesbian dancers.

What is the history of the Cotton Pickin' Squares?

Our club was formed in September 1991. By the July 1992 I.A.G.S.D.C. convention, we were officially recognized by that organization and have never stopped dancing and having fun.
